If VCM saves you 1 mpg, that's ~5% in fuel costs. If the wear induced by VCM is only statistically significant at the 200k mile mark, then it's likely worth it.

With VCM deleted, I got ~24-26 mpg on our latest road trip. A few times we got 27 on a tank. VCM is a flawed technology that can cause piston rings to prematurely fail, cause excessive oil consumption, spark plug fouling, and damage to motor mounts. The risk to these parts is not worth the small fuel efficiency gains in my opinion.

I installed the S-VCM Controller - Disable VCM / deactivate VCM and stop ECO in Honda Acura one at about 115k on my 2012 to make sure it does well as it ages. It feels better driving in daily driving and loses the odd feeling as if it’s gear hunting in the 40-50mph range.
